Blog 5b: New Science Fair Proposal

1. Topic: Autism from a psychiatric perspective

2. Problem: Symptoms of related disorders overlap, that is why the parents need to be specific and give details to an evaluator.
  • Quote: "It is important to understand whether these symptoms reflect underlying mood, anxitey, impulse control and psychotic disorders, or if they are behaviors that are part of the autism spectrum. Some clinicians prefer to avoid making a psychiatic diagnosis because of this overlap."
3. Hypothesis: If details are overlooked, then a psychiatrist could misdiagnose a patient.

4.
  • Experiment: I will create a pseudopatient's case file that will be a description of what the parent's have observed in their toddler. Not all the information on the chid will be given for the first round as to symbolize a parent's mistake in not telling the psychiatrist everything. After review of this case file, the evaluator will base his/her prior knowledge and criteria given to diagnose the patient. If the patient fails the test, it will look like he/she doesn't have autism; instead he/she will be diagnosed with the autism related disorder. In the next round, the case file will be updated with all information given. After careful review, the patient should pass the test for having autism.
  • Tools: M-CHAT, age of patient, realted disorder, information given, number of false positive test results.
