Stowell Learning Disability Debrief

Attended the ADHD Simulation
  • Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 (10am-11:30am)
  • Conducted by panel of certified employees for teaching parents and children how to deal with and fix learning disabilities. Head speaker had her Master's in Special Education.
  • Participated in 4 activities that simulated how a child gets through their day.
    1. Getting ready for the day.
      • I was only able to remember 4 of the 6 things the "mother" told us to do before we went to school. For ADHD child, they would become easily distracted by things going on their room.
For the following of the activities, we were given activity worksheet for the rest of the "classes at school". Each had some kind of 'twist' for people without ADHD. All of them incorporated some kind of anxiety, distraction, or incompletable task:

2. History (child hears things that he might have thought of while daydreaming, unsure if the teacher actually said it, but writes it down anyway because he feels too insecure to ask.

    3. Spelling (The directions given caused problems for others to focus on what they needed to do. This would occur when an ADHD kid can't concentrate on just the task at hand.)

    4. Math (too many problems, and not enough time will cause the child to be anxious or to not even attempt to try.)

At the close of the simulation, we were given a bag full of fliers for upcoming meetings for the parents and a book:
