Autism Flyers

Basically this is what is on my flyer minus the pictures

Fun Facts about Autism
Autism: (noun) A mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.

Fact #1

As of 2006, 1 in every 110 had autism. As of 2008, the number has increased to 1 in every 88.

According to the DSM-IV-TR, Autism is part of the autism spectrum disorders; the others include Asperger’s Syndrome, Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and PDD-NOS.

Fact #3

There is no single test to fully diagnose autism. Diagnoses are a combination of doctor’s and parent’s observations, history of the child, evaluations, and the evaluator’s knowledge of Autism.

Fact #4

It is widely speculated that Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and even Bill Gates are on the Autism spectrum.

Fact #5

Autism is more common than juvenile cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.

Fact #6

Autistic children have over/under stimulated senses. A child could literally feel trapped in their own skin.

Fact #7

From the Greek word “autos” meaning “self”; autism literally means “alone.”

Fact #8

Fact #9

Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939), a Swiss psychiatrist, first termed “autism” but applied it to adult schizophrenia. In 1943, the term was redefined by Leo Kanner (1894-1981) who dissociated autism from schizophrenia to create the modern understanding of the disorder.

Fact #10

Autism is not just a brain disorder. It is often accompanied by gastro-intestinal disorder, food restrictions, and many allergies.

Don’t think of autism as a hindrance. Think of it as a blessing in disguise. There are certainly going to be days when you think it’s impossible he/she will develop adequate skills; but if you don’t look out for your child, who will?
