Helping the Senses

May 6, 2013

Some kids with autism have hypo-touch. They want to touch everything. The different textures of clothes, foods, surfaces, or any material amazes them. However, because their touch is underdeveloped, they may harm themselves because they can't feel enough pain in time. They will scrub and scratch and pull their skin to feel something. They may even go as far as banging their heads against a wall. I found a recipe for making something called Flubber. Though this isn't a solution for hypo-touch and certainly won't solve the problem of self-injury, it is a small remedy that may entertain them for a while.
